A free public viewing of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Civic Center Plaza
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, in partnership with America SCORES Bay Area, is hosting three free public viewings of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup at Civic Center Plaza. The viewings begin with a match-up between Team USA and Sweden on June 12th at 5:00PM with event activities starting at 4PM. Other screenings include a Semifinal game on June 30th at 4:00PM and the World Cup Final on July 5th at 4:00PM.
“Parks bring people together and we are thrilled to be bringing people together to support the US Women” said, Mayor Ed Lee. “It is great to be hosting another year of Women’s World Cup public viewing events at Civic Center Plaza.”
This year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted in venues across Canada, and Team USA is expected to be one of the dominant sides. Coach Jill Ellis will have a strong blend of youth and experience at her disposal throughout the tournament. Former FIFA World Player of the Year Abby Wambach will likely pair up with Alex Morgan to continue the partnership that led Team USA to the 2011 World Cup Final in Germany, where it fell to Japan in a close match. The tournament officially begins on Saturday, June 6th and this strong US team will try to recapture the World Cup title it last held in 1999.
“We host a variety of free events year-round throughout our system, but none is closer to my heart than this,” said Phil Ginsburg, SF Rec and Park General Manager. “You feel the energy, and connection to each other, building at every one of these screenings.”
“This year’s viewings will feature the world’s most popular women’s soccer stars on the big screen and wonderful activities for young players on the grass areas,” said Colin Schmidt, Executive Director of America SCORES Bay Area. “We hope children from all over the city — especially girls — will come out to enjoy the games and festival atmosphere.”
San Franciscans will have the opportunity to watch the best women soccer players from around the globe battle it out to see who is the best in the world. Along with the games on the big screen, fans will be able to get their faces painted in team colors, scrimmage on mini soccer courts and take part soccer skills activities provided by Soccer in Slow Motion. There will be gourmet food trucks from Off the Grid and much more. For more information please visit our website at www.worldcupsf.com.
