The Market on Market Opens Wednesday

The Market’s flagship gourmet food market will open at 1355 Market Street on January 21, 2015.

The Market is opening its flagship location on January 21, 2015 at 1355 Market Street. Anchoring the ground floor of the historic Market Square building, The Market will bring an elevated food experience to the heart of mid-Market, a neighborhood experiencing a modern renaissance. Complementing the influx of tech giants including Twitter, Uber and Square and numerous hi-rise residential communities, The Market completes the neighborhood’s transformation by providing long-awaited retail, dining and grocery.

Spanning 22,000 square feet, The Market will offer groceries, takeaway food and casual dining under one roof. Inspired by European merchant shopping and the pre-war American experience and moving away from big-box, large-batch and heavily-processed foods, The Market will offer small-batch, locally sourced, fresh and healthy foods. Customers can shop daily for natural, high quality and local groceries, fresh fish, humane and pasture-raised meat and poultry, a variety of cheese and charcuterie, and breads and pastries baked in-house.

The Market will feature local-farm produce and thoughtfully-sourced, organic and specialty grocery items from small food businesses. Vendors include Happy Boy Farm and Live Earth Farms from Watsonville, CA, as well as Nana Joe’s Granola, Little Belgians, Living Apothecary and SF Salt Company.

The Market has also partnered with a select number of best-in-class local vendors to bring their offerings to wider audiences. This includes artisan chocolates and confections from Nuubia SF, natural skin care products from EO Products, Malaysian noodles and street food from Azalina’s, sustainable and spectacular flower arrangements from Farmgirl Flowers, organic and vegan juices from Project Juice, and coffee and espresso drinks from Blue Bottle Coffee.

Under the direction of Executive Chef Robert Leva, previously of Salt House, The Market’s dining menu will feature modern takes on classic recipes with influences spanning from the Mediterranean to Mexico. Dining will include the café featuring Four Barrel Coffee, a taco and tortas bar, a pizzeria, a sushi/sashimi and oyster bar, and sandwich and tapas bars.

The Market aims to enrich the local community, including providing a living wage for its employees. 60% of the employees were recruited through community based organizations, with a large percentage of the employees residing in The Market’s neighborhood, District 6. The hiring department has collaborated closely with the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Mission Hiring Hall, Self Help for the Elderly and Goodwill. In addition, The Market has also established relationships other community based organizations including Swords to Plowshares, Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco and Vietnamese Youth Development Center.

The Market will be open seven days a week from 7am to 10pm. For more information, contact or see
